  Part   III       Reading   Comprehension         30’
Directions:   In   this   part   there   are   3   passages.   Each   passage   is   followed   by   some   questions   or   unfinishedstatements.   For   each   of   them   there   are   four   choices   marked   A),   B),   C)   and   D).   You   should   decide   on   the   best   choice   and   mark   the   corresponding   letter   on   the   Answer   Sheet   with   a   single   line   through   the   center.

  Passage   1
Questions   46   to   49   are   based   on   the   following   passage:

One   thing   that   needs   discussion   is   the   problem   of   finger   pointing   in   reading   an   article.   Many   people   consider   it   to   be   a   very   bad   habit.   Teachers   in   preschools   or   kindergartens   are   continually   faced   with   children   whose   finger   is   planted   firmly   under   the   words   they   are   learning   to   read.   Children   seem   to   feel   that   with   their   finger,   they   can   more   easily   guide   their   eyes   to   the   part   of   the   page   they   wish   to   read.
Many   teachers   discourage   this,   however,   insisting   that   the   child   take   his   finger   off   the   page   and   “read   properly.”   Why?   The   answer   is   not   clear.   I   have   asked   a   number   of   teachers   (and   teachers   of   teachers)   and   the   answer   usually   is   that   the   finger   "slows   the   child   down.”   This   may   be   true   if   the   child   feels   safe   with   his   finger   under   a   word   and   does   not   wish   to   move   on   to   the   next   word.   But   it   is   not   a   perfect   answer.   For   surely   if   the   finger   is   placed   on   the   book   by   the   child   because   it   helps   his   eyes,   and   if   the   teacher   feels   that   the   actual   placing   of   the   finger   slows   the   child   down,   then   the   answer   is   not   to   tell   the   child   to   take   his   finger   off   the   page,   but   to   tell   him   to   speed   it   up.
If   you   happen   to   be   a   finger-pointer,   don'   t   be   too   worried   ---   it   is   a   natural   habit   and,   if   used   properly,   may   lead   to   a   great   increase   in   reading   speed.   To   begin   with,   you   may   find   difficulty   in   speeding   up   your   finger,   because   you   will   have   become   used   to   a   certain   rhythm   and   speed,   but   if   you   keep   on,   solid   gains   should   not   be   too   far   away.

  46.   The   passage   is   concerned   primarily   with   _______________.
        A.   relationships   between   teachers   and   preschool   children
        B.   reading   speed   and   comprehension
        C.   the   problem   of   finger   pointing   in   reading   an   article
        D.   how   to   get   rid   of   bad   habits   in   reading

  47.   The   reason   many   teachers   discourage   finger   pointing   is   that____________.
        A.   the   finger   may   probably   take   the   child’s   attention   away
        B.   finger   pointing   may   slow   down   a   child’s   reading   speed
        C.   finger   pointing   prevents   a   child   from   understanding   properly
        D.   the   finger   covers   some   words   the   child   is   going   to   read

  48.   Children   who   are   finger-pointers   __________.
        A.   use   their   fingers   as   a   guide   of   their   eyes   while   reading
        B.   realize   that   finger-pointing   is   a   bad   habit   but   can'   t   help   doing   so
        C.   are   usually   careless   and   very   slow   language   readers
        D.   do   not   know   where   to   put   their   fingers   if   not   placing   them   under   words

Passage   2
Questions   50   to   54   are   based   on   the   following   passage:

Personal   computers   and   the   Internet   give   people   new   choices   about   how   to   spend   their   time.
Some   may   use   this   freedom   to   share   less   time   with   certain   friends   or   family   members,   but   new   technology   will   also   let   them   stay   in   closer   touch   with   those   they   care   most   about.   I   know   this   from   personal   experience.
E-mail   makes   it   easy   to   work   at   home,   which   is   where   I   now   spend   most   weekends   and   evenings.   My   working   hours   aren’t   necessarily   much   shorter   than   they   once   were,   but   I   spend   fewer   of   them   at   the   office.   This   lets   me   share   more   time   with   my   young   daughter   than   I   might   have   if   she’d   been   born   before   electronic   mail   became   such   a   practical   tool.
The   Internet   also   makes   it   easy   to   share   thoughts   with   a   group   of   friends.   Say   you   do   something   fun----see   a   great   movie,   perhaps----and   there   are   four   or   five   friends   who   might   want   to   hear   about   it.   If   you   call   each   one,   you   may   tire   of   telling   the   story.
With   e-mail,   you   just   write   one   note   about   your   experience,   at   your   convenience,   and   address   it   to   all   the   friends   you   think   might   be   interested.   They   can   read   your   message   when   they   have   time,   and   read   only   as   much   as   they   want   to.   They   can   reply   at   their   convenience,   and   you   can   read   what   they   have   to   say   at   your   convenience.
E-mail   is   also   an   inexpensive   way   to   stay   in   close   touch   with   people   who   live   far   away.     More   than   a   few   parents   use   e-mail   to   keep   in   touch,   even   daily   touch,   with   their   children   off   at   college.
We   just   have   to   keep   in   mind   that   computers   and   the   Internet   offer   another   way   of   staying   in   touch.   They   don’t   eliminate   any   of   the   old   ways.

  50.   The   use   of   e-mail   has   made   it   possible   for   the   writer   to   ___________.
        A.   work   at   a   speed   comfortable   to   him
        B.   have   more   free   time   with   his   child
        C.   work   at   home   on   weekends
        D.   spend   less   time   working

  51.   The   passage   discussed   all   the   following   aspects   of   e-mail   EXCEPT   _________.
        A.   its   easy   and   convenient   use
        B.   the   format   of   writing
        C.   the   saving   of   time
        D.   its   cost

  52.   According   to   the   writer,   e-mail   has   an   obvious   advantage   over   the   telephone   for   the   reason   that   the   former   helps   one   _________.

        B.   get   in   touch   with   one’s   friends   faster   than   the   latter
        C.   keep   one’s   communication   as   personal   as   possible
        D.   reach   a   group   of   people   at   one   time   conveniently

  53.   The   passage   is   written   to   __________.
        A.   tell   the   merits   and   usefulness   of   the   Internet.
        B.   describe   the   writer’s   joy   of   keeping   up   with   the   latest   technology
        C.   explain   how   to   use   the   Internet
        D.   introduce   the   reader   to   basic   knowledge   about   personal   computers   and   the   Internet

  54.   The   best   title   for   this   passage   is   ___________.
        A.   Computers:   New   Technological   Advances
        B.   Computers   Have   Made   Life   Easier
        C.   Internet:   A   New   Tool   to   Maintain   Good   Friendship
        D.   Internet:   A   Convenient   Tool   for   Communication

  Passage   3
Questions   55   to   60   are   based   on   the   following   passage:
In   the   earliest   stages   of   man’s   development   he   had   no   more   need   of   money   than   animals   have.   He   was   content   with   very   simple   forms   of   shelter,   made   his   own   rough   tools   and   weapons   and   could   provide   food   and   clothing   for   himse1f   and   his   family   from   natural   materials   around   him.   As   he   became   more   civilized,   however,   we   began   to   want   better   shelter,   more   efficient   tools   and   weapons,   and   more   comfortable   and   more   lasting   clothing   than   cou1d   be   provided   by   his   own   neighborhood   or   by   the   work   of   his   own   unskilled   hands.   For   these   things   he   had   to   turn   to   the   skilled   people   such   as   smiths,   leather   workers   or   carpenters   who   were   springing   up   everywhere.   It   was   then   that   the   question   of   payment   arose.
At   first   he   got   what   he   wanted   by   a   simple   process   of   exchange.   The   smith   who   had   not   the   time   to   look   after   land   or   cattle   was   glad   to   take   meat   or   grain   from   the   farmer   in   exchange   for   an   axe   or   a   plough.   But   as   more   and   more   goods   which   had   no   fixed   exchange   value   came   on   the   market,   exchange   became   too   complicated   to   be   satisfactory.   Another   problem   arose   when   those   who   made   things   wanted   to   get   stocks   of   wood   or   leather,   or   iron.   But   had   nothing   to   offer   in   exchange   until   their   finished   goods   were   ready.
Thus   the   difficulties   of   exchange   led   by   degrees   to   the   invention   of   money.   In   some   countries,   easily   handledthings   like   seeds   or   shells   were   given   a   certain   value   and   the   farmer,   instead   of   paying   the   smith   for   a   new   axe   by   giving   him   some   meat   or   grain,   gave   him   so   many   shells.   If   the   smith   had   any   shells   left   when   he   had   bought   his   food,   he   could   get   stocks   of   the   raw   materials   of   his   trade.   In   some   countries   quite   large   things   such   as   cows   or   camels   or   even   big   flat   stones   were   used   for   trade.   Later,   pieces   of   metal,   bearing   values   according   to   the   rarity   of   the   metal   and   the   size   of   the   pieces,   or   coins   were   used.   Money,   as   we   know   it,   had   arrived.

Passage   4
Questions   61   to   65   are   based   on   the   following   passage.
As   summer   arrives,   bringing   sunny   days,   warm   nights,   and   a   marked   lack   of   schoolwork,   many   graduating   high   school   seniors   are   already   looking   toward   the   start   of   their   college   careers.   For   most,   it   is   a   time   of   excitement,   but   their   feelings   are   often   hampered   by   the   realization   that   they   must   find   a   way   to   pay   for   their   education.   The   prospect   of   borrowing   $10,000--$25,000   a   year   for   at   least   4   years   is   rather   daunting   (使畏缩),   considering   the   fact   that   if   the   student   has   a   job   at   all,   he   or   she   is   probably   making   close   to   minimum   wage.   In   reality,   for   many   college   graduates,   student   loans   are   the   thing   that   most   hampers   them   from   having   early   success   in   their   chosen   profession.   To   cut   down   on   the   costs,   students   have   several   avenues   from   which   to   obtain   money.   The   first   and   most   obvious   one   is   financial   aid.
The   best   kind   of   financial   aid   available   from   the   government   is   in   the   form   of   grants,   which   do   not   need   to   be   repaid.   This   is   typically   offered   to   those   students   who   are   largely   unable   to   finance   their   college   education.   More   common   is   the   student   loan,   which   is   tailored   to   the   needs   of   the   student.   The   student   loan,   like   any   other   loan,   must   be   paid   back   with   interest   sometime   in   the   future.

The   third   financial   aid   option,   and   the   one   that   provides   the   least   amount   of   money,   is   the   work-study   program.   The   Federal   government   established   the   work-study   program   to   allow   students   to   feel   a   part   of   paying   their   way   through   college.   At   many   schools,   students   obtain   campus   jobs   and   the   income   they   make   from   those   jobs   is   channeled(用于)   directly   toward   their   college   costs.   Campus   jobs   usually   pay   fairly   well,   because   the   campus   minimum   wage   is   often   several   dollars   per   hour   above   the   state   minimum   wage.

Around   most   college   campuses,   there   is   also   a   large   variety   of   businesses   that   look   to   hiring   college   students.   This   is   logical,   as   the   businesses   often   locate   near   the   available   workers.   A   recent   study   indicates   that   eight   out   of   ten   students   work   while   pursuing   an   undergraduate   degree   in   college,   and   students   are   more   likely   to   use   funds   earned   during   the   academic   year   to   finance   their   education   than   they   are   any   other   sources,   like   financial   aid   or   parental   support,   although   the   others   may   be   higher   in   dollar   amount.   Students   who   hold   jobs   while   attending   school   on   average   work   about   25   hours   per   week,   which   is   quite   a   long   time   when   classes   and   extracurricular   activities   are   considered.

While   academic,   athletic,   and   other   scholarships   are   perhaps   the   most   satisfying   ways   of   financing   a   college   education,   the   reality   is   that   most   students   must   look   to   other   sources   of   revenue.   Grants,   loans,   and   even   work-study   are   usually   reserved   for   those   who   most   desperately   need   them,   so   for   many   students   whose   parents'   income   is   too   high   to   qualify   for   aid   based   on   need,   but   too   1ow   to   pay   for   all   of   the   students'   costs,   employment   is   the   best   choice.   Certainly,   if   financial   aid   is   available   to   you,   and   you   feel   it's   in   your   best   interest   to   accept   it,   do   so,   but   if   for   some   reason   the   financial   aid   you   receive   is   not   sufficient(足够的)to   pay   the   tuition   bill,   remember   that   you   won't   be   alone   if   you   get   a   job.
